Why your computer is slow: how to find the actual cause

Short answer: A slow computer almost always has one of four causes: a failing or nearly full drive, a malware infection, too many startup programs, or thermal throttling from dust. Diagnose which before spending anything — Task Manager identifies three of the four in under five minutes, and the fix differs completely for each.

Step by step

  1. Open Task Manager and look at the pressureCtrl+Shift+Esc → Performance. Disk pinned at 100% points to a failing drive or heavy background activity. Memory consistently above 80% means you need more RAM. CPU high at idle means something is running that should not be.
  2. Check drive healthRun "wmic diskdrive get model,status" or a SMART utility. A drive reporting anything other than OK is the whole problem, and no cleanup will help. Back up immediately before doing anything else — a failing drive gets worse, not better.
  3. Check free spaceWindows needs roughly 15-20% of the system drive free to function properly. Above about 90% full, performance degrades sharply. This is the easiest cause to fix and the most frequently overlooked.
  4. Review startup impactTask Manager → Startup apps, sorted by impact. Disable what you do not need launching at boot. Be selective rather than disabling everything — some entries are drivers you actually want.
  5. Scan for malwareRun a full scan with Windows Security, then a Microsoft Defender Offline Scan if anything looks suspicious. Cryptominers in particular cause exactly the "suddenly slow, fans loud" pattern.
  6. Check temperaturesA CPU running hot throttles itself to avoid damage, which feels identical to a software slowdown. Dust in the fans and dried thermal paste are the causes, and both are cheap to fix on a machine worth keeping.

Will a registry cleaner speed up my computer?

No. Registry cleaners provide no measurable performance benefit on modern Windows and carry a real risk of removing entries that matter. Skip them entirely — the four causes above are what actually determine speed.

Should I upgrade or replace my computer?

If it is under about six years old and still has a mechanical hard drive, an SSD upgrade gives the single biggest improvement per dollar and is well worth it. If the hardware cannot run a supported version of Windows, put the money toward replacement instead.
