Printer Setup & Repair
Printer installation, wireless setup, offline printers, driver conflicts, print spooler errors and scan-to-computer problems.
Printer Setup & Repair — the short version. Most often the printer changed IP address after a router reboot while the computer is still looking at the old one. Assigning the printer a static or reserved IP in the router permanently fixes this. Sleep settings on the printer and a stalled print spooler are the other two common causes.

Signs you need this
- Printer shows "Offline" even though it is powered on

- Cannot connect the printer to Wi-Fi
- Scan to computer or scan to email stopped working
- Prints streaked, faded or blank despite full cartridges
How we fix it
- Verify the basicsConfirm power, connectivity and consumables before touching software — a surprising share of "broken" printers are a Wi-Fi drop.
- Reset the queueClear the print spooler and stuck jobs that block everything behind them.
- Reinstall cleanRemove conflicting or duplicate driver packages and install the correct current driver.
- Fix the networkGive the printer a reserved IP so it stops disappearing every time the router reassigns addresses.
- Test end to endPrint and scan from every device that needs it, not just the one we set up on.
Printer Setup & Repair — questions we get asked
Why does my printer keep going offline?
Most often the printer changed IP address after a router reboot while the computer is still looking at the old one. Assigning the printer a static or reserved IP in the router permanently fixes this. Sleep settings on the printer and a stalled print spooler are the other two common causes.
Why did my printer stop working after a Windows update?
Windows updates sometimes replace a working manufacturer driver with a generic one that lacks features, or break an older driver outright. Removing the printer completely — including the driver package from the print server properties — and reinstalling the current driver from the manufacturer resolves it.
How do I connect my printer to Wi-Fi?
Use the printer control panel to run the wireless setup wizard and select your 2.4 GHz network, since many printers cannot see 5 GHz networks at all. If your router broadcasts both bands under one name, temporarily separating them makes the printer connect reliably.
Is it worth repairing a printer or should I replace it?
For most consumer inkjets under about $200, replacement is usually cheaper than a mechanical repair. Setup, driver and network problems are always worth fixing because the hardware is fine. Laser printers and business-class machines are generally worth repairing given their much higher replacement cost.
