Windows Support & Troubleshooting

Windows 10 and Windows 11 problems: boot failures, blue screens, failed updates, broken Defender, driver conflicts and slow performance.

Windows Support & Troubleshooting — the short version. The most common causes are a corrupted update cache, insufficient free disk space on the system drive, a damaged component store, or a driver that blocks the install. The fix is to clear the SoftwareDistribution cache, run DISM /RestoreHealth to rebuild the component store, then retry. The specific error code narrows it down immediately.

Signs you need this

  • Blue screen / stop code on startup or during use
  • Windows Update fails repeatedly with an error code
  • Windows Defender will not turn on or shows "managed by your organization"
  • PC stuck on the spinning dots or a black screen after login
  • Windows 11 upgrade blocked by TPM or Secure Boot
  • Printer, audio or Wi-Fi stopped working after an update

How we fix it

  1. DiagnoseRead the actual stop code, event log and update error rather than guessing — the code names the failing component.
  2. Recover accessGet the machine bootable via Safe Mode, Recovery Environment or a repair install if needed.
  3. Repair the OSRun DISM and SFC to rebuild corrupted system files, reset the Update stack, roll back bad drivers.
  4. Restore protectionRe-enable Defender and Windows Security if malware or a leftover third-party suite disabled it.
  5. VerifyReboot cycle, confirm updates install cleanly, confirm the original symptom is gone.

Windows Support & Troubleshooting — questions we get asked

Why does Windows Update keep failing?

The most common causes are a corrupted update cache, insufficient free disk space on the system drive, a damaged component store, or a driver that blocks the install. The fix is to clear the SoftwareDistribution cache, run DISM /RestoreHealth to rebuild the component store, then retry. The specific error code narrows it down immediately.

Why does my Windows Defender say it is turned off?

Defender turns itself off automatically when another antivirus registers as the active provider, so the usual cause is a third-party suite — installed or partially uninstalled. If you see "managed by your organization" on a home PC, malware or leftover software has written a Group Policy key. Removing the leftover registration and clearing that policy restores Defender.

How do I fix a blue screen error?

Write down the stop code shown on the blue screen — it identifies the cause. Driver-related codes are fixed by rolling back or updating the offending driver; memory codes call for a RAM test; storage codes point to a failing drive, which should be imaged before anything else. Repeated blue screens on a machine with an ageing SSD should be treated as a hardware warning, not a software bug.

Can you fix Windows without losing my files?

Almost always, yes. An in-place repair install rebuilds Windows while keeping your files, settings and installed programs. We only recommend a clean install when the drive is failing or the installation is too corrupted to repair, and we image your data first either way.

My PC will not boot at all. Is the data gone?

Usually not. A machine that will not boot most often has a software or boot-record problem while the drive itself is fine, and the data can be read by connecting the drive to another system. Even with a failing drive, most data is recoverable if the drive is imaged before further boot attempts, so stop retrying and get it looked at.

Is Windows 10 still supported?

Windows 10 reached end of mainstream support in October 2025. Machines still on it stop receiving security patches unless enrolled in Extended Security Updates, which makes them progressively riskier to use online. We can check whether your hardware meets the Windows 11 requirements and handle the upgrade, or configure ESU if the hardware cannot make the jump.
