Antivirus Setup & Configuration
Independent help installing, configuring or removing security software, and resolving conflicts between competing suites.
Antivirus Setup & Configuration — the short version. No — two real-time scanners will fight over the same files, causing freezes, missed detections and heavy slowdowns. Windows Defender automatically steps aside when another suite registers itself, which is the correct behaviour. Run exactly one real-time product; on-demand second-opinion scanners are the only safe addition.

Signs you need this
- Security software will not install or fails partway through
- Two antivirus programs installed and conflicting
- Antivirus blocking a program or website you need
- Leftover files after uninstalling a suite, blocking Defender
- Scans never finish or the program will not open
- Not sure whether the paid product is worth keeping
How we fix it
- Audit what is installedIdentify every security product present, including partial uninstalls that still hold registrations.
- Remove cleanlyUse each vendor official removal tool to clear leftovers that a normal uninstall leaves behind.
- Install one productConfigure a single suite properly — running two real-time scanners causes the conflicts, not more safety.
- Tune exclusionsSet sensible exclusions so legitimate software stops being blocked, without opening real holes.
- Verify protectionConfirm real-time protection, definitions and scheduled scans are genuinely active.
Antivirus Setup & Configuration — questions we get asked
Can I run two antivirus programs at once?
No — two real-time scanners will fight over the same files, causing freezes, missed detections and heavy slowdowns. Windows Defender automatically steps aside when another suite registers itself, which is the correct behaviour. Run exactly one real-time product; on-demand second-opinion scanners are the only safe addition.
Why will my antivirus not install?
The usual cause is remnants of a previously installed suite. A normal uninstall frequently leaves drivers and registry registrations that block the new product. Each major vendor publishes a dedicated removal tool that clears these properly, and running the right one first resolves most failed installs.
Is Windows Defender good enough on its own?
For most home users, yes. Defender scores comparably to paid suites in independent AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives testing, is free, and integrates with Windows without slowing it down. Paid suites are worth it mainly for bundled extras — VPN, password manager, identity monitoring — rather than for meaningfully better malware detection.
My antivirus subscription expired. What should I do?
Decide first whether you want to keep that product. If yes, renew directly through the vendor official website or your account with them — never through a link in an unexpected email or pop-up, which is a common phishing vector. If not, uninstall it cleanly and Windows Defender will re-enable itself automatically.
Where do I get official support for my security software?
Contact the vendor directly through the official support page listed on their website, or through the account portal you used to purchase. Official vendor support handles billing, licensing, refunds and account access — those require vendor account access that no third party has. We are an independent repair shop and can help with installation, conflicts and removal on your machine, but we are not affiliated with any vendor and cannot access your vendor account.
