Wi-Fi & Network Setup
Router configuration, dead zones, dropping connections, mesh installation and secure guest networks.
Wi-Fi & Network Setup — the short version. The most common causes are channel interference from neighbouring networks, an overheating or ageing router, outdated firmware, or simply being too far from the access point. Routers older than about five years drop connections increasingly often as they age and are frequently the whole problem.

Signs you need this
- Wi-Fi drops several times a day and needs a router reboot
- Dead zones in parts of the house or office
- Speeds far below what you pay for
- New router needs configuring securely
- Devices connect but have no internet access
- Need a separate guest or IoT network
How we fix it
- SurveyMeasure actual signal strength and channel congestion in each room rather than guessing where the problem is.
- Fix the sourceVerify the modem line and confirm you are getting the speed you pay for before blaming the Wi-Fi.
- Reposition or extendRelocate the router or add mesh nodes where coverage genuinely needs it.
- Secure itWPA3 where supported, a changed admin password, current firmware, WPS disabled.
- SegmentPut guests and smart-home devices on a separate network so they cannot reach your computers.
Wi-Fi & Network Setup — questions we get asked
Why does my Wi-Fi keep disconnecting?
The most common causes are channel interference from neighbouring networks, an overheating or ageing router, outdated firmware, or simply being too far from the access point. Routers older than about five years drop connections increasingly often as they age and are frequently the whole problem.
Will a Wi-Fi extender fix my dead zone?
An extender helps in a specific weak spot but halves throughput on the extended band and creates a second network name to switch between. A mesh system costs more but keeps full speed and one seamless network, which is the better choice for whole-home coverage.
Why is my internet slower than what I pay for?
Test with a wired connection directly to the modem first — that separates a Wi-Fi problem from a line problem. If wired speed is correct, the bottleneck is your Wi-Fi or router. If wired speed is also low, the issue is with the line or provider and needs to be raised with them.
How do I secure my home network?
Change the router admin password from the default, enable WPA3 or WPA2 encryption, keep firmware updated, disable WPS and remote administration, and put smart-home devices on a separate guest network so a compromised device cannot reach your computers.
